I'm in the free agents but do I need to sign up somewhere also?

You're not in the free agents list. At the top left it should say Join Free Agents on your "User Menu" in Blue, Click that. If that doesn't work look under "Squad" does is give you an option to leave squad? Do that, sometimes that's bugged.
