Because iPhones keyboard layout uses weird encoded characters that the database rejects. I think I might have a solution though.

I guess when iOS started using smart punctuation it posed a problem for developers. Believe me I tried all of those things. Microsoft's smart quotes work just fine. It's the iPhone's fuckery that doesn't. Only fix I could find is disabling smart punctuation on the user's end.
