I think your last line there is precisely the problem. They're scared to kill characters in the way GRRM did because it'll upset fanboys so the solution is.. put everyone on the brink of death but not actually kill 'em, hurhur standard hollywood drama at the sacrifice of good storylines/writing/logic. I'll still finish the show (would be silly not to with 3 episodes left) but as stated previously, if that's the end of the ww/nk/bran storyline and Cersei serves as a final villain, it's a huge disappointment.
