So first off, let me say - Polls are a horrible way of deciding to implement changes. I didn't even know the poll was even up for 10 man roster limit. Most of the polls are super skewed with their options.
Example:
- Roster format for next season?
5v5 with 8 roster cap and smaller maps?
(40%, 17 Votes)
Current format with roster cap of 10
(57%, 24 Votes)
Of course roster limit of 10 will win over a 5v5 league. If you're going to try to use a poll to change current roster limit - the poll should be something along the line of -
What should Season 21's Roster Limit Size be?
a) 16 (no change)
b) 14
c) 12
d) 10
So anyways - the main reason why 10 man roster limit is a horrible idea is squad activity. We got extremely luck with Season 20's average player activity because we were inbetween most "seasons" of other games that our community play and there were no popular new game launches during majority of the season. We can't expect that to be the case every season, Season 21 will likely experience less average player activity per player than Season 20. I believe we can expect players to be anywhere between 80-90% as active as they were in Season 20 in Season 21.
By taking 16 man roster limit (assuming full squad and equal player activity) down to 10 man roster limit you are now effectively reducing the amount of overall player activity on the squad to 62.5% of it's previous activity.
This means that if you were able to have 8 players on average be active and log on every night of the week for SBs with a roster limit of 16. Going forward you will now have:
8 * . 625 = 5 Players (Adjusting for the 10 man roster limit)
If you then adjust that 5 Players with average activity due to game launches / seasons other games.
5 * .9 = 4.5 Players
If the leagues forward with a 10 man roster limit - it will be a rare occurrence where TWO squads both have 7+ players online during week nights to be able to SB without NTs.
So again, that is the player activity problem with a 10 man roster limit. There's also multiple other problems such as being able to fit all players onto squads for the next season. We can expect 60-70 USL players for Season 21 if we look at the numbers from Season 20. Having 6 good squad captains is going to be an extreme pipeline dream. I don't believe there are 6 captains willing to manage and lead 6 different squads. If we only have 4 or 5 squads form, the roster limit is going to have to be increased before season start to accommodate the player base or the player will leave. Why start at 10 if the likelihood of increasing is so high?
Lastly, there are much better solutions to fix the main problem that a 10 man roster limit is trying to accomplish. I'll propose my own solution in another topic soon. If we're insistent on trying to use polls to validate change to the league, I would very much like to see this poll put up and the results followed:
