why do most USL'ers either have no interest in or refuse to play CTFPL?

you guys are a bunch of unwelcoming assholes. I was startoing to go to mixes and maybe get into it but all I did was get flamed by some refs. the guys that should be helping the league.

People really only play this to kill time. No one is really invested enough to branch out. Mostly just stick to what they know/like.

USLers would need to learn how to play the game to even stand a chance against a scrub CTFPL team.

A cursory glance at how CTFPL plays out vs. how USL plays out should show what an uncoordinated clusterfuck USL is most of the time.

i recently introduced the idea of implementing x settings...is that something that would help USLers make a transition? or at least help them entertain the idea of playing PL?

That would help a lot as the majority of USL players did play X a lot.

For one, ovd's suck. When public (mix) ovds became a normal thing, I saw that as the end on CTF and the beginning of CTB, capture the base.

Jumping into a public game of CTF would be cool, but I'm sure it would just be street rape. Not really a situation where its fun to play my preferred class, Hvy. Just like gladiator, shot gun raped every time.
When there were mixes, there was a lack of a system to make sure everyone played. And also, noone wanted to be capt which resulted in stacked teams

Because CTFPL is boring watching the same players get picked over and over again. When a new player gets picked he just gets ridiculed and it always feels like he let his team down (because he did).

CTF and USL have very different play styles. I started with CTF, then HC/FL. USL took quite a while for me to learn.

Conversely, if you started with USL, CTF is fairly difficult to pick up.

It takes time to learn each style, then get used to switching from game to game. Axi's new map and settings do really help. The warp points help stop street raping cause you are always warp into either your own or the enemies base. Unfortunately, once an OvD starts it fades pub.

Short answer ...... life sometimes sucks.

Axidus's changes are a big improvement. There's an enormous skill gap between the CTF population of mostly long time vets and the people trying to branch out into it. It's similar to how a squad like Hypocrites does against the top 1-2 squads here... That leads to one of two things:

1. New players get to play without ridicule, but the vets get bored
2. New players don't get to play, get flamed, or get punished for mistakes they make (short games, etc.) and either don't get picked again or decide life's too short to worry about CTF and leave.

What champion points out is also true.

Most people want to be able to jump straight into a game that's somewhat organized and be allowed to play the class they want to play. For CTF, that's really hard to balance and requires sacrifices from a lot of people (like vets that can play multiple classes). Sacrifices like that are rare in today's game, and usually isn't appreciated when it happens (hi Axi & Mizz).

Everyone's points are pretty accurate. The best avenue right now seems to be to put more effort into the playing the pub map Axidus made for us in order to generate population. We need at least 40-50 active players for a 4 squad 10v10 league.

Yea skirmish was just pub for a while. We built up the population and I started USL back up which brought more people in. I think you guys rushed right into CTFPL which didn't work out as well.

Yeah, we probably jumped the gun because FI Season 1 was pretty successful =/

The biggest problem with CTF is camping and spec info. For so long I have been trying to combat both without any joy in SL/USL.

Thankfully since being recruited to the USL change committee I have been an exemplary leader endorsing the good sportsmanship rule which I feel CTF could very much benefit from as it allows power hungry nerds who get mad at scottish guys winning champs.

To put it into perspective I guess: I find USL matches pretty boring overall, but I find OvD's 10x more boring than that. I love some CTF/CTF:X flagging nonsense etc., but staying in one little building doing that for however long is just eww.

If the CTF crew could get back to doing a normal pub, even if that means on a smaller map, I would totally be down to log some hours. Oh, and also CTF:X itemset please and thank you.

I'd be more likely to play if it were X settings and there was a regular pub
