🛡️ x1
TL DR: A lopsided affair. Apocalypse took the win in stride.
Review:
In watching this match, most people will have complaints in mind regarding the map and whether or not it should a valid choice for USL. However, the decision for the validity of this map was made a long time ago and if it wasn't appealed then, then for tonight's match it should be valid still as far as the league is concern.
Since taking up the mantle of leadership, the current leader of Out of Nowhere (OON) has made many unorthodox choices to mix things up and make it a more... unique experience for both the viewer and his opponents. Choosing this map tonight is one such choice.
On paper, Lava station is a great choice for a squad relying on support troops like Ripper and Snipers to carry the team. The strange terrain coupled with death-trap like corridors will hamper the more aggressive/mobile team and favor the ... camping/defensive team. The physics also make it deadly for team to push into since the small choke points can be filled with LAWs and grenades in seconds.
Unfortunately, it is the execution part that failed OON tonight. Their habit of falling back (and in the process abandoning their teamates) and clumping up allows Apocalypse to slip through many choke points uncontested. Basic choke point holding tactics like throwing nades and Laws were severely absent. With the team falling back too fast, it is hard for their Ripper Gunner and Sniper to set up their aim and streams. And even when the Sniper or Ripper succeeded in weakening an opponent, the constant falling marines could not hope to capitalize on time.
As for Apocalypse, they were initially cautious with the strange and rarely played terrain. However that initial caution is quickly thrown to the wind as they tried to catch up with the constantly retreating enemy! They did not have to fear choke points, knowing a regular push with just 1 or 2 marines is enough to scare off 4-5 OON players. With the enemy scattered and out of position, most of the battles were just merely clean up action of the stragglers that OON left to die.
OON did attempt to move and tried various strategies to exit their base to give battle but the angles and their reactionary tendency foiled them over and over again. In the end they got tired of trying to exit the base and Apocalypse was just as tired of backing off to let them try and it become a trenching fight... One that will no doubt be a focal point to the many appeals made about this map in the coming days.
