Man I made the mistake of saying I hope GRRM does a better job of explaining the WWs/NK in his books if he ever finishes them - on reddit. Big mistake. ASOIAF nerds downvoting the shit out of me explaining to me GRRM hasn't even really mentioned them yet. They angry. Fucked up part is I even specifically said I know they're barely mentioned in the first 5 books.

GRRM mentioned that the NK is a legendary character, similar to Bran the Builder. The show rolled with the NK because zombies and it's a clear cut villain.
