I think that the Recommended Salary Cap is a bit high. I threw together a quick team of high cost players and came up with:
830 salary: Sov, Sol, Champ, Fax, Kippa, Colossal, Devil, ER, tg.

That's 9 players with room for a 10th valued at 70, like Death, Z, Victim. Going with only 10 players increases the chance for no-shows, or playing down a person, but that's still a pretty stacked team (if you managed to get them all together).

So you set the salary cap somewhere between 600-650.

The issue is you need a number that will allow squads to have a full roster (I think Fausto said the hard cap is 11?) while not letting them stack. So if you recruit like 2 top tier and the rest mid you're going to have a bunch of salary space left over and it's kind of "wasted". When I'm not drunk I'll do the math and figure it out.

The problem is there's not a set amount of players at every group so the salary cap as is will just create the same squads as last season without as much depth

Wanna use my idea yet?

Here's a wacky mix of ideas to consider. They don't have to be exclusive either. Having never played in the USL, just coming back, and knowing full well that it's been finalized, I will now talk like I know everything.

Here's how I see it going down.

Ultimately the salary cap-era, or season by season, will start with some sort of draft. IDK what the future holds but, besides the "best" players ought to be the captains of each team, the pick order should be by lottery and not past performance (duh). Consider these ideas on draft day:

1. As a nod to the kinship and identity each squad has/had, allot a small amount of "protected slots" so that squads retain at least -some- of the friends/identity they had, even if it's just "one slot" as, like, Assistant Captain. Just as the Penguins wouldn't be the same without Crosby and Malkin, or, the Habs without Carey Price or P.K. Subba- oshit the GM is a moron, each squad could pick a "small" group to be their "core", right off the bat. This is like a compromise between "Salary Cap Picks" and "Squad: GodMode, Team of Transformers".
Oh, you got shafted by your best buddy? Fk that guy, let drama commence.

2. Sol is 830 and you're not? Then on draft day, why not "barter"?

The problem with Free Agents is assigning a specific "value" to a player that everyone agrees upon. They may be God's gift to a keyboard, or a specific class in particular over others is just OP in their hands, or they are teamwork heroes. Now, I understand that this has already been charted out, and you'd have a much better idea of that person's skillset than I do at the moment. Even still, why not let the free market decide each player's value? With each pick, a Captain must "contract" that player for a certain "Salary", according to their rank in the aforementioned chart? Then, after it's all done, If Captain X wants Captain Y's dave, then let them barter - if it's no longer strategically useful to them, Captain Y might just say fk it and there goes dave. Or maybe dave is now worth double what he should have been??

In other words, if you want to start playing "Fantasy Infantry", allow all the gadgets that people normally have access to. Maybe even midseason trades? Would this allow one Captain to create "the same team as x year"? Maybe. But if both sides know [anything] about bartering, it -still- won't be cheap to try.

And it adds drama. From what I've gathered in my short time here so far, it seems like people are worried about "not playing with their friends". Awwwww pumpkin. Who cares? Public zones still exist. I say, FK that - Drama IS the fun! You could meet some people, can "always learn something", and you still play with your friends - only now you can screw them over! What's the point of having friends if you can't shoot their guts out at least once a week? This is like Fantasy Sports, only then you go play the sport!

This is an old KR player that's never played USL (outside perspective isn't always bad).

BUT, unfortunately Jordan is right. A while a draft league would settle many issues and place an inherent value on players based on their order of selection (as long as every captain tried to make the best team they could)...

Evidence
-Prefer draft league: 5 votes, 7%
-Prefer salary cap: 27 votes, 39%

Too many egos in this game to force them to play with each other

Call me out of the loop, but how exactly are the teams going to be formed without a pick order? You -are- drafting, even if you don't want to call it that.

And say, it gets past the obvious 1st rounders, and there's a really good second-tier player that two teams want - maybe because he's the shit and the chart got it wrong. I say, blame the chart maker and cash in on the mistake, but is there no negotiation after picks?

As for the egos thing, like I said, that's "good". In fact, that's Great! Like Pepe on Real Madrid doesn't have an ego, or doesn't mind it if Karim Benzema, Marcelo, Bale, or that twerp Cristiano Ronaldo is missing/slacking. I see shuffling up the status quo as a breath of fresh air - let us peons moan and squawk about it.
-------------------------------------------------------
By the way, just IMO, if you straight-up "aren't going to play" because you aren't with Bumfuck Gandalf and the Hobbits, you are a goddamn pussy. And I really can't be soft about this, because this isn't for the Dota Invitational... we are all trying to play 'purely for the fun of competing', --again--, in an ancient game without even a developer, and you're sitting on your ass because your team is missing a hobbit?

If a Captain will be, I assume, one of the best players to ensure some fairness right off the bat, then newsflash! USL, and by extension Infantry, has never revolved around you! Though you may be very good, you are not and have not been important enough to have the "keys to the driver's seat" on Pick Day. Let me know how many pillow liners you soaked with tears once that sinks in, go for the high score before you see a psych.

Actually I'll even throw in some tips - what shall you do? I say hold on to your wee wee and suck it up. If you left the game and got sucked into Pokemon GO, we'll have a league going "you know what, I remember Dude X - if he were on this team right now, this team would be awesome!" "Yeah man he was cool, I hope Pikachu isn't in the middle of a crosswalk." "Or maybe we should hope for it?"
Yet you have been playing an outdated game that you know blatantly involves pure skill, you've gotten incredible at it (I guarantee anyone who's read this far would utterly destroy me in a duel), and you could have chosen a zillion games to play with your friends, but you picked this one. So, do we really have to create "Squad: Wimps Who Must Hold Hands or Be Lost"? If you have even a pebble of self-esteem, you would give this USL round a try, at least to experiment.

Nobody likes Cristiano Ronaldo or Pepe anyway.

You're damn right, que. I'm stunned at the amount of "picket line" people who won't play if they aren't with their former squad.

I played MSL - that's pre-EOL days. I -know- there's ego in Infantry. What I didn't expect is it to be highschool-level.

EDIT: I mean, back in the day it was grade school level lol. K/D macros flying all over the place, hissy fits from community leaders, the near constant fights with Yahtzee...
But then after the dust settled, everyone got back in line and continued class.

Now, it's become akin to a clique to be in a clan. Oh we might all be in the same school - free infantry - but it sounds like a draft would be like jocks and nerds partying it up. Well, more like nerds and nerds, but you get the idea.

The point is pop base is so small that it literally splits certain people from the game to consider this new framework and yet, Inf can't afford to lose more people. So, the onus is on us as a community to survive - put ego aside and shoot your friends. If you all know each other, throw a nade at them!

"how are teams gonna be formed without a draft?"

Ugh captains send invites to people they want to play with and if that player wants to play with that captain they click accept. Just like every major sports league.

And no, this game is for fun there's no point in playing if you can't play with at least some friends, drafts make you end up with players you don't really like, so why would you show up?
